I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!
I had a delightful one. Some pictures on Flickr now.

Today's my last day at work for the year. I've been working 4 of the last 5 days so there's lots I want to do, including seeing my family. Other things on the cards are going to the cinema to watch It's a Wonderful Life or other old films and braving the sales and shopping a little bit. I'm not bargain hunting, there's stuff I still need to get for people, so no choice really. Won't complain if stuff that I'm getting happen to be on sale though.

New Year next. Quite excited.

Christmas Day

Hope you've all had a good Christmas Day.
I'm fucking stuffed, and annoyed with myself as I have plans to lay on more food :p

Merry Christmas etc etc <3

Are there any classic holiday movies or TV shows that you look forward to watching year after year? What are your all-time favorites? Are there any you simply can't stand?

Rage Against The Machine

  • 18th Dec, 2009 at 5:11 PM
So it's looking as if Rage Against The Machine may well be this year's Christmas #1.
To be honest, it's been a good few years since downloads started being counted in with physical sales, so I'm kinda' surprised that this internet trolling of the #1 spot hasn't happened before (like, how is Rick Astley NOT #1 every week?).
I had mixed feelings about this at first.
While I'm in total agreement that Simon Cowell's X Factor machine has totally ruined the English Christmas #1 tradition, the picking of an 18 year old song nothing to do with Christmas seemed a bit bizarre.
Lots of people seem to be buying (or at least saying they're buying) Killing In The Name purely to stand up against Christmas, or try to do something big, take money away from Simon Cowell.
The only way that any money will be taken away from Simon Cowell, is if somebody that was planning to buy Joe McElderry's (I had to Google that :p) single, decides to buy RATM instead.
Buying in to a stranger's internet joke is not so much "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" as "That sounds like a great idea, I'm going to do just that!".

While Simon Cowell publicly stating that the whole fiasco annoys him looks like a bad move on his part, he knew what he was doing, and knew that it was sure to generate sales on both camps, lining his pockets even more as people that were on the fence jumped to one side, and coughed up for a download.
Until yesterday, I didn't know that the guys organising the appeal were also urging people to donate to charity, which they have. So far they've raised over £50,000 for Shelter, which si great, and so much more meaningful than what we're going to hear on Top of The Pops come Christmas day.
Tom Morello saying he'll also be giving whatever he makes off this to charity also pulls me further to his camp.
The choice is now between a boring guy (albeit a popular, publicly voted for boring guy) singing a song that doesn't suit his voice, and something a bit different, that's going to make a difference to something that matters.

I'm all for the end of Cowell's boring domination of the Christmas number one spot, and think this is just the first step on what will probably be seen as the next revolution.
Hopefully next year we get a Christmas song at Christmas #1!

Me, I'm not buying.
I've had Killing In The Name in mp3 form for around 10 years (back in the days when I sued to listen to a lot of music in this genre), and think the appeal has gone beyond needing my sale.
I'll be donating my quid directly to shelter.
My the best song win :}

1 Week To Go

  • 18th Dec, 2009 at 3:01 PM
With a week left until "the big day", I've received a late entry to join the Christmas fun.
Lap will make it a group of 4! :o
Will have to organise the full plan of action with him, Neil, and Steve, and also go shopping for food (don't think West Kebab will be an option on Christmas Day, I'm afraid :p).

Christmas party tonight. Wonder how it'll pan out, and how drunk I'll get (I'd like to think that last weekend was ample seasoning for a night at a free bar, so hopefully not stupidly drunk).

I think it's just about starting to feel like Christmas. The free drink and mince pies at work yesterday (accompanied by live Christmas carols) has probably helped.
Anyway, how is your Christmas preparation going? Got it all wrapped up?

A little late this year, but still well in time for Christmas, it's the album of the year.
Download, listen, enjoy :}

Christmas is a-coming?

  • 16th Dec, 2009 at 3:31 PM
Last night I turned on the TV to watch the animated episode of Doctor Who that looks like a bad Wii game. The least said about that the better (it sent me asleep at 8pm), but during the time I spent hunting around the Virgin catch-up menus, I realised something.
The TV build-up is very much a main part of what makes it feel like Christmas.
Every advert had Christmas music overlaid, every trailer was for something Christmas related. Maybe the fact that I rarely watch television nowadays goes part way to explaining why it feels a lot less like Christmas than I remember it feeling at this time on previous years.

Had quite a few cards come through in the last couple of days, and tonight I'll put the ol' tree up, so maybe a little realisation will kick in then.
At least I got my presents shopping done early. Got just one left to get (and I know what it is, and where to get it).
Food shopping will also need to happen at some point.
Just a week left at work, and then no more working until 5 days into 2G10! :o

One strange sign of Christmas showed itself today. Snow... except, wait... it never snows in December in London! o_O
Obvious snowfall just over a week before Christmas? Maybe we should all head to William Hill and put that infamous "white Christmas" bet on :o
